Everyone has that big, tall dream they hope/wish to live someday; a world they believe once they achieve will make them fulfilled. On the most part, it could be related to material wealth or fame, or reaching certain milestones in their career or personal life. Whatever it is, the mere thought of reaching that promised land gives them the 'kick'. Think of that big, exciting dream you have which you may have shared with others or simply kept to yourself. How beautiful it would be to actually live it; to live in the moment with the widest grin ever on your face after throwing that 'yes!' sucker punch... Now you smile.
Unfortunately, ninety seven percent of people who dream will never get the opportunity to live that moment of actualization, talk more of enjoying the rewards for dreaming big. And it will interest you to know that the "unfortunate" element about their failure to reach their goal(s) is not because they tried and fell short. It is because they never set out in the first place! They spend their whole lives dreaming, but never a day to live it.
You, surely, don't want to end up in that statistic, do you? At 90, you don't want to be sitting on a rocking rocking chair, oblivious of time, and ruing missed opportunities and what could have been. Start today!
Start now. What are the things you have always wanted to do or that you will need to do to make your dream a reality. Your dream may seem big, but you can start with little baby steps. The key thing is to start. Just start. Like a ship on water with its anchor deep down, you will always remain at that spot if you refuse to set sail. The anchor is mostly fear of the unknown - the fear of failing. I used to lie to myself that "If I didn't start in the first place, at least I am safe. Nobody can accuse me of failing". That line of thought not only makes you a failure, but confirms you a coward!
One of the things I have always wanted to do is write. I a 'see' myself as a great writer with deep potentials. But, I hardly write. Why? Because I only wanted to write to perfection. I wanted to write things that will evoke emotions and probably move people to tears. I wanted to write like a demi-god. And so, each time I set out to write and hit a brick ahead or feel like these line are not coming out perfect, I retreat. I put off writing until some other time. Then, I realized I was good, but was never going to be a great writer because I never started. I took up blogging as a challenge to start out writing. Enough of the hiding and hoping one day it will all come together in a click. You don't wait for the future, create it!
You may see yourself as a business mogul/magnate building empires the likes of Dangote and Alakija will envy. Yet you are afraid to start small because you might fail.Well, you might, and you might not. But why not try it out and see first. Take that little step.
Sometimes, fear drives you to information overload without action. A friend of mine always had this thing for starting a laundry business. He has read several books and visited several sites on how to run a business, and a laundry/drycleaning business in particular. He could conveniently lecture you on how to set up and run a successful laundry business, all the things you require to start and how to win and retain customers. However, he has not yet started anything..... since four years ago! Think of it, four wasted years waiting in fear. He would have used that time to start 'fail', learn and start again better equipped and informed. The passion is there, but fear has crippled the drive.
What is holding you back? Who says you can be or do what you have always dreamed about. Cancel the fears. Take those baby steps. You will be proud the distance you will go. What if Steve Jobbs never started, or Bill Gates, or Mark Zuckerberg. What if Oprah Winfrey never started, or Dangote, or Tony Elumelu or Strive Masiyiwa. When you ask yourself, "What if I fail?" ask also "What if these guys never started?"
The real failures are those who didn't 'succeed'. The real failures are those who never ventured.
